A Song
and a Prayer

Meet Consolatte Bucumi

At New Generation Transformative School, Consolatte begins each day with faith, music, and hope for the children she teaches.

Consolatte Bucumi smiles in a school doorway, wearing a colorful striped dress.

A day in my classroom

I start each morning with prayer before getting ready for school. I live nearby, and I’m grateful that the school’s founders chose to bring quality education to our village. It means more opportunities for our children.

At school, we gather as teachers for devotions, prayer, and time in God’s Word. Then come the national and East African anthems. When I welcome the children into my classroom, we begin with a song and a prayer.

I want my classroom to be a peaceful, welcoming place where children feel safe and ready to learn. After classes, the teachers share how the day went and prepare lessons for the next day.

Room to learn and create

There is so much I love about Burundi: the green mountains, the beautiful places to visit, and the way people welcome others. But our schools face real challenges. We need more schools, books, desks, and learning materials. Some schools have around 100 children in a single classroom.

I also believe children need opportunities to draw, paint, make music, and discover their creativity. Reading, writing, and working with numbers are important, but there is more to learning.

“My greatest hope is that the children I teach will go far in life.”

Looking ahead

I want to see the children I teach accomplish things that make a difference in their communities and in Burundi.

Outside the classroom, I enjoy farming. And if you’re wondering about my favorite food, it’s fish!

Teaching is a joyful part of my life. I’m proud to be part of New Generation Transformative School and to help our children build their futures.
