Icari (ee-chah-ree) is a Kirundi word meaning nest — a place of safety and preparation for flight.
We serve alongside educators and communities in the Muyaga region of Burundi, helping build a school that is a nest for the next generation.

This Summer in Muyaga

This summer, our team will return to the rural mountain community of Muyaga, just outside Bujumbura. It will be the second year of operation for New Generation Transformative School, now serving both Nursery 1 (three-year-olds) and Nursery 2 (four-year-olds).

We will continue building on what has begun, strengthening both the classrooms and the teachers who lead them.

Preparing the Classrooms

We are working to transform classrooms into spaces where children can learn, explore, and grow.

  • Classroom revitalization through tiling floors to prevent mud during the rainy season and painting murals that bring the space to life
  • Learning environments built with local craftsmen, including classroom learning centers designed for active, hands-on learning
  • Educational resources such as visual aids, classroom kits, and lesson materials for daily use
  • Curriculum development in early math, pre-literacy, science, art, and music

Equipping the Educators

Lasting change happens through local teachers. This summer, we will invest deeply in their growth and leadership.

  • Classroom mentorship through hands-on coaching and modeled instruction
  • Teacher training focused on early childhood development, especially the learning needs of four-year-olds
  • Leadership development by equipping lead teachers to mentor others
  • Community support that strengthens both the practical and personal calling of each educator

Lasting impact comes not only from training, but from equipping teachers with the tools and confidence to continue strengthening their schools long after we leave.

Meeting Practical Needs

We are also addressing the everyday barriers that affect learning:

  • Providing fleece hoodies for children during colder weather
  • Supporting families who struggle with school fees and uniforms
  • Exploring the purchase of a school bus to make education accessible for children who cannot reach the mountaintop school

Why This Matters

Each step forward expands what is possible. A tiled floor means no mud. A confident teacher means engaged minds. A school bus means access. Each step prepares another child for flight.
